Strategic Portfolio Management (SPM)

Strategic Portfolio Management is the coordination of an organization's strategies, initiatives, and investments as a single portfolio, so leaders can prioritize, fund, and adjust by value and risk.

Strategic Portfolio Management treats all of an organization’s strategic bets as one investment portfolio rather than a scattered list of projects. The discipline connects strategy to the initiatives and funding meant to deliver it, and gives leaders a way to prioritize across competing demands based on value, risk, and capacity.

SPM is a Gartner-tracked software category. Traditional SPM tooling leans heavily on stage-gate governance; modern practice is shifting toward the lighter, continuous approach of lean portfolio management.
